• Enforcement Process

Once you make an enforcement request an investigation is started. The Code Enforcement Officer must first verify the violation. In the case of a physical violation, this can often be accomplished with one field check. In the case of a use violation, several field checks may be needed to verify the suspected violation.

Once a violation is confirmed, the property owner/violating party is notified and given an opportunity to correct the violation. This may involve simple property cleanup, obtaining the proper building permits or a more extensive process involving a Town obtained Variance or Land Use Permit through the Planning Department.

The time to complete an enforcement action is dependent upon the time necessary to verify the violation, the time necessary for the violator to secure any needed building permits, land use permits or a variance and the time necessary to correct the condition.
