The Town of Danville is a collaborative partner in Street Smarts, a traffic safety education program in the San Ramon Valley. The purpose of Street Smarts is to address traffic safety problems at its source: in the minds of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Street Smarts complements the Town of Danville’s efforts involving engineering and enforcement.
The Street Smarts program works on different levels: marketing and public relations, community outreach, and active educational programs at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
At the elementary school level, Street Smarts holds an annual Street Smarts Storybook Poster Contest, where children illustrate traffic safety images for a traffic safety storybook that is distributed in the community. At the middle school level, the Annual Street Smarts “Be Reel!” Video Contest drives students to create 60-second public service announcement videos about traffic safety themes. For high school students, a teen driving safety campaign called “It Happens” is an interactive, web-based effort for teens to learn about traffic safety from their peers by sharing stories of their own experiences as a driver or passenger.
Street Smarts is a program of the Town of Danville, City of San Ramon, County of Contra Costa, San Ramon Valley Unified School District and the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs. The program is made possible in large part from corporate sponsors, including this year’s sponsors: Sunset Development Company, State Farm Insurance, and Club Sport of San Ramon.
